Management pays for a professional Pest Control company to spray once a month. Beyond this, here are some important tips to help keep your space mostly free from those darn bugs.
THE #1 THING you can do to KILL ROACHES is DON'T FEED THEM!
DON'T LEAVE FOOD/DRINK OUT OVERNIGHT. If you've ever been camping, you learn quickly that leaving food or drinks out for too long is a very, very bad idea. It quickly attract all sorts of bugs. The camping rule for food is: If you leave it out, it has to be in a sealed container OR just put away.
KEEP KITCHEN CLEAN OF FOOD PARTICLES - Keep the Counter, Stove/Range, and Microwave wiped down - void of the remains of food items. Wash those dishes!
MOP FLOORS ONLY BEFORE Pest Control's Monthly Visit. Mopping after will dilute the chemical spray.
KEEP APARTMENT CLEAN & ORGANIZED - Bugs like your clutter - it's their home/hiding spot. Don't let trash sit too long. During the Summer, take the Kitchen Trash more often to avoid Fruit Flies.
USE A FLY SWATTER for all things that fly. It also works on roaches too BUT, if you're not fast enough... ROACH SPRAY is quick, super, super easy-to-use, and kills every time.
USE A DOOR DRAFT GUARD to fill the air gap under the door. It significantly reduces hallway noise AND it also helps prevent any unwanted travelers/guests (roaches) coming from your neighbors' apartments. (see Amazon)
USE DIATOMACEOUS EARTH (DE) POWDER - Works on all Bugs. Long-lasting. Proven 90% effective. Non-toxic, organic, all-natural. Safe for pets, kids, adults. It kills all insects by dehydrating them. It's the only type of pest control product that bugs can't adapt to. Lightly dust bug prone nesting and traffic areas like baseboards, behind/under cabinets and bookshelves, under kitchen/bathroom sink cabinet, etc. Dust must be kept dry to remain effective.
I don't know why, but in the Summer Months, Roaches seem to reproduce exponentially. SO I USE an "ALL OF THE ABOVE" Approach to Defend My Apartment. I got all these at Walmart. Click on the images below to take you to Walmart's website. I use these weapons/tools in addition to my regular use of Diatomaceous Earth (DE), see below.
$5.64 at Walmart.
I buy one every 2 to 3 months and use it when I spot one out in the open.
A Fly Swatter CAN work also, but you have to be quick and accurate.
Use of the can spray seems to be more effective.
It comes in a few different scents, but I prefer the Fragrance Free.
Kills Roaches, Ants, Bed Bugs... almost all insects.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is an organic, non-toxic, all-natural powder that kills insects (bugs) by dehydrating them. Food Grade DE (100% DE) is safe for humans and pets to touch and consume/eat in limited quantities. It is used in organic farming, applied to the coat of pets to kill fleas, and also fed to pets and humans to kill parasites and worms (not effective against pet heartworms).
CAUTIONS: DE must be kept dry to work. DE may irritate the skin on contact (just wash off) and because it is a fine powder, it should not be inhaled while applying. SO, if doing a major broad application around the apartment you should probably wear a mask and wear some type of gloves (like medical latex gloves). YouTube videos sometimes recommend using a paint brush to help lightly spread or dust DE around. "LIGHTLY DUSTING" is the key to applying DE in your home.

FLEAS, TICKS, BEDBUGS, COCKROACHES, DOGS & CATS...
Living in the South (USA), expect to live with Cockroach issues. It's a constant battle. Here are some key tips.
SEARCH for those little buggars! Try to identify nesting areas & conditions so you can learn to check for other similar areas. Look in things, under things, etc. - you'd be surprised where they end up nesting. THEN, develop a regular plan of checking, cleaning, and applying DE, spray, or other pesticides to those areas.
Yes, it can happen to the cleanest of apartments. Having guests over? Well, bed bugs easily travel on people and can infect your home, often unknowingly to everyone - till later. Get educated and prepared to do combat. Early identification and responding will help prevent suffering. Setup a regular plan/habit to identify (search out), clean/vacuum, wash bed sheets/blankets, used cheap insect floor glue traps, and spray DE and/or other pesticides once a hotspot has been found.
